How We Treat

Compression Therapy

Compression therapy can help manage swelling and discomfort in the lower legs and feet. Chiropodists provide guidance on selecting and using compression garments that support comfort, mobility, and daily activities. At our clinics, we offer custom‑fitted compression stockings designed to provide controlled support, help manage lower‑limb swelling, and promote comfortable movement throughout the day.

Assessment

Compression socks therapy

Your visit begins with an assessment of your feet and lower legs. The chiropodist will review your symptoms, examine the affected areas, and discuss any factors that may be contributing to swelling or discomfort. Measurements may be taken to ensure proper sizing and fit.

This helps determine whether compression therapy is appropriate and which type of garment may best support your needs.

Treatment Options

Compression therapy may be recommended to help manage:

  • Lower‑leg or ankle swelling

  • Fatigue or heaviness in the legs

  • Discomfort during prolonged standing or activity

  • Swelling related to foot or ankle injuries

  • Post‑procedure or post‑treatment swelling in the lower limb

Your chiropodist will outline a plan that may include one or more of the following:

Graduated Compression Stockings

These garments apply controlled pressure to the lower leg, with the highest compression at the ankle and gradually decreasing up the leg. They are available in different lengths, materials, and compression levels. Your chiropodist will recommend an option based on your comfort, activity level, and daily routine.

Compression Sleeves

Sleeves provide targeted compression without covering the foot. They may be recommended when swelling is localized to the lower leg or when footwear considerations make full stockings less suitable.

Custom Fitting

Proper fit is essential for comfort and effectiveness. Your chiropodist will take measurements and ensure the garment fits securely without causing irritation or restricting movement.

During the Appointment

Your chiropodist will explain how to apply and remove the compression garment, how long to wear it, and how to care for it. You will have the opportunity to try on the garment in the clinic to ensure it fits comfortably and functions as intended

Aftercare

You will receive instructions on:

  • How long to wear the garment each day

  • How to monitor for skin irritation or pressure points

  • How to wash and maintain the garment

  • When to return for reassessment or re‑measurement

Compression garments may need to be replaced periodically to maintain their effectiveness

When Compression May Be Helpful

Compression therapy may be considered if you experience:

  • Swelling in the feet or lower legs

  • Discomfort during long periods of standing or walking

  • Swelling following a foot or ankle injury

  • Fatigue or heaviness in the lower legs

  • Difficulty finding a comfortable, supportive garment on your own

If compression is not appropriate, your chiropodist will discuss alternative options.

When to Seek Care

A chiropodist can help if you notice:

  • Persistent swelling in the feet or ankles

  • Discomfort that worsens with activity

  • Difficulty finding properly fitting compression garments

  • Skin irritation or pressure areas from existing garments

If your symptoms suggest a condition outside chiropody scope, your chiropodist may recommend follow‑up with your primary care provider.
