How We Treat
Cortisone Injections
What Is a cortisone injection and how does it work?
Cortisone injections can be a helpful option when heel pain isn’t improving with rest, footwear changes, or other conservative treatments. The goal is to calm inflammation in a specific area so you can move more comfortably again.
Cortisone is a natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands when the body is under stress. A synthetic version of this hormone can be injected directly into the irritated area, often around the side of the heel, to help reduce inflammation.
When inflammation settles, pain often becomes easier to manage.

What you can expect:
-
Pain typically begins to improve within a few days
-
Relief may last a few weeks, and in some cases, a few months
-
The injection is performed in‑office and does not require local anesthetic
Cortisone injections are most commonly used for chronic plantar fasciitis and other inflammatory foot conditions that haven’t responded to conservative care
When cortisone may be considered
Your chiropodist may recommend a cortisone injection when symptoms are persistent and interfering with daily activity.
It can be helpful for:
-
Chronic heel pain
-
Bursitis or joint irritation
The decision is always based on your symptoms, exam findings, and overall treatment goals.
What to expect during your visit
Your appointment begins with a focused assessment to confirm the source of your pain and review all treatment options. If a cortisone injection is appropriate, the medication is placed precisely into the irritated tissue. Most people tolerate the procedure well and can walk out of the clinic shortly afterward.
After the injection, you may notice:
-
Temporary numbness or relief
-
Mild soreness for 24–48 hours
-
Gradual improvement over the following days
When cortisone isn’t the first choice
It’s important to exhaust non‑invasive treatments before considering cortisone. Your chiropodist will discuss alternatives such as footwear changes, stretching, load management, or custom orthotics before recommending an injection.
