What We Treat

Calluses

What are calluses?

A callus is a large, thick, toughened area of skin that forms in response to repeated friction or pressure. Not to be confused with plantar warts or corns, calluses most commonly develop on the ball of the foot (metatarsal area) or the bottom of the heel. While generally not harmful, the natural loss of fibro‑fatty padding in the feet can increase the likelihood of developing calluses. If left unmanaged, calluses may contribute to more serious complications such as ulcers or infections, particularly in individuals with higher‑risk conditions like peripheral neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes.

Calluses
How are calluses treated?

Our Chiropodist can treat or remove calluses by cutting away the layers of only dead skin with a scalpel. No downtime is involved. Many times adhesive padding made of semi-compressed felt, usually made at the chair side provides substantial temporary relief. Professionally fitted footwear and custom made ORTHOTICS can prevent calluses from forming or at least slow down their growth. The better fitting footwear gives the patient’s feet more room and the custom made orthotics would reduce pressure on the affected areas.
